I date myself when I say that the first time I saw the title of this devotional, I thought of Don McClean’s 1971 hit song beginning with this phrase. The inspiration for this song, actually called “Vincent,” was Van Gogh’s famous painting, now housed in the Museum of Modern Art. 

The brightness of this painting belies the shadow of Van Gogh’s psyche, as much as the brilliance that punched through that darkness. 

And so it is with Advent in the Northern Hemisphere. The nights get longer and deeper; and the stars stand out more and more. Jesus talks about the stars as signs that something, Someone, powerful and mighty, is coming in glory, bringing solace and strength to our darkest hours.

I hope you’ll join me in perusing this wonderful Advent devotional, which is suitable for all ages. It weaves Scripture, history, astronomy, and song into practices to help us see the Light of the World as it prepares, yet again, to break through our darkest places.
