PreK-3rd Grade: Godly Play

Our kindergarten and early elementary school children gather in the Christ Church Chapel at the start of the main service for a Godly Play session. We finish up by joining the rest of the congregation for the Eucharist.

Our Godly Play class is so fortunate to be able to use the Chapel for our gatherings, particularly as this curriculum mirrors the rhythms of worship. Using child-size materials, we encourage active participation as we introduce young children to the structure of a traditional Episcopal service. Torch bearer, Bible bearer, prayer leader – each child plays an important role. We sing, learn to pray with movement, and share in a story using the Godly Play method, a Montessori-based children’s curriculum.

Godly Play is a child-led approach to learning using images and high quality manipulatives like the carefully crafted wooden ark and animals or the ever-present people of God figurines. And just ask our children about the piece of the desert that lives in our space or the colorful calendar that helps us to visualize our journey through the liturgical year. Godly Play engages practitioners and participants of all ages in deep wonder and helps us to enter the story, building on it year after year through collective wonder, individual response, and a spiral curriculum that grows with the children.
