Our film this time is After the Mayflower, a documentary and part of the award-winning PBS series, American Experience. It focuses on the perspective of the Wampanoag, the indigenous tribe responsible for the land the Pilgrims took as they settled and then expanded in the southeast of what eventually became our state. The Wampanoag made an alliance with the British settlers only to have it end in a brutal war only 50 years later.
We intend to pair it with a short film from the national Episcopal Church that delivers views of Native American Episcopalians – both lay and clergy. Native Voices explores Indian boarding schools and other parts of Native American history that still have an impact today. We chose these films because we found them to be eye-opening and helped us have a deeper understanding of the history and experience of Native Americans.
