July 30, 2023: The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Summer Worship is at 9am  in the Chapel, no livestreaming
Our last live stream was June 4, as we move to the Chapel for summer worship starting this Sunday, June 11. The Chapel lacks the necessary equipment to continue this important ministry. Livestreaming returns on September 10, when we go back to the Main Church for worship. We will make every effort to create and post audio recordings of summer sermons, which will be shared in the weekly eBlast. Thank you for your understanding.

Welcome the Rev. Anne Gardner as guest preacher this Sunday, July 30

This Sunday, July, 30, The Reverend Anne Gardner, a native Needhamite, will serve as our guest preacher (with Nick presiding) offering a reflection on her experience of walking the famed Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile path that extends across the width of northern Spain. She has written a book about this extraordinary journey, recently published by Adelaide Books (NY/Lisbon), titled And So I Walked. The book recounts both the challenges of completing a long-distance hike as well as the emotional and spiritual undercurrents her time on the trail revealed. Gardner currently runs the chaplaincy program at Harvard-Westlake, a private independent high school in Los Angeles. Prior to accepting this position, she spent twelve years as the Director of Spiritual and Religious Life at nearby Phillips Academy, Andover. For many years Gardner has worked as a freelance writer, crafting pieces for various outlets including NPR, The Boston Globe, The Providence Journal, and the National Catholic Reporter, among others. Help Fill Grocery Bags for B-Safe

Christ Church will once again support the B-Love grocery bags for students attending the B-Safe Summer Program at St. Stephen’s in the South End.  This important program helps address food insecurity for these families, an important mission and a meaningful way to give back to those in need.

For nearly 25 years, St Stephen’s in the South End has been sponsoring life-giving programs for 1000s of youth and families throughout Boston. One of these programs is a summer program called B-Safe. A component of that program is called B-Love, which helps feed the families of the enrolled children on a weekly basis.

We have the opportunity to fill 60 bags of non-perishable grocery items for distribution on August 1. We need your help!

  1. Can you commit to filling one or more bags of non-perishable items (the list of items is included in the sign up)? Please sign up here.
  2. Would you be willing to collect the bags and store them until we deliver on August 1? If so, please email Alyssa Kence or call 617-851-9175
  3. Do you have time, during the day, on August 1 to help deliver the bags? If so, please contact Alyssa (email or 617-851-9175).

Join Racial Justice Initiative’s for the third film in the series Facing Race: A Film Series for Christians about Racism in America this Sunday, July 16

Our Racial Justice Initiative group invites you to the third film in the series Facing Race: A Film Series for Christians about Racism in America this Sunday, July 16 at 5:30pm in the Chapel. We will be watching the documentary 13th, which explores the economic history of various legislation and practices that replaced slavery after the Civil War – from the late 1800s through today.
The film reminds us that the Black Lives Matter movement was not just about police killing unarmed Black men, but also about mass incarceration, which multiplied the prison population from 1970 to 2016 by five times! And while Black men were about 6.5% of the U.S. population, in 2016, they were 40.2% of the U.S. prison population. Learning the history of how and why this happened seems important for Christians to know as we think about how to respond to the racial problems of today.
