Enjoy the Sounds of the Season

At Christ Church Needham, Christmas is a feast for the ears and eyes as well as the spirit and soul. We invite you to join us for a musical program offered by our music director, choristers and musicians to make your advent season more meaningful and merry than ever.

Sunday, December 15, 3 PM
A Festival of Lessons and Carols in the Sanctuary

A traditional Advent service of nine Bible readings (lessons) followed by carols or choral anthems sung by the Adult and Youth Choirs. Included are “E’en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come,” “People Look East,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” “Lo, How a Rose,” “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and more.  Joined by guests Bruce Goody, flutist, and Jonathan Moretz, guitarist.  Pamela Goody, music director, Charles Raines, associate music director, and organist and Lea Peterson, youth choir director, invite you to enjoy an afternoon of Advent music.  It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in Upper Parish Hall’s Community Art Gallery amid the colorful paintings of artist Evelyn Berde (see image at right).

Tuesday, December 24
Christmas Eve

4 PM.  Family service and Christmas Pageant in the Sanctuary.  Children are invited to dress as an animal, angel or shepherd.  Costumes are provided on-site.  The Youth Choir, directed by Lea Peterson, will sing “Once in Royal David’s City” at this fun, active family service.  Also featuring Charles Raines, associate music director and organist.

8:30 PM.  Pre-Service Concert.  “A Christmas Garland on Greensleeves,” written by Richard Shephard specifically for Christmas Eve.  Performed by the Adult Choir with soloists Lea Peterson, Grant Furgiuele and Mark Anderson.  This musical gem will be accompanied by string quintet, flute and organ. Additional selections include “A Midwinter Fantasy” based on Gustav Holst’s “In the Bleak Midwinter,” arranged by Morgan Denney, and “Veni, Veni, Emmanuel,” arranged by Michael John Trotta

9 PM.  Christmas Eve Eucharist and Choral Service.  Featuring the Christ Church Choir, Bruce Goody, flutist, and Charles Raines, organist.  Musical highlights include “The Oxen” composed by Mark Schweizer, and Kim Lysaght singing “O Holy Night.”  In one of the season’s most moving moments, the congregation will sing “Silent Night”  by candlelight.

Wednesday, December 25
Christmas Day

9 AM.  Christmas service in the Chapel.  Join us in the intimate setting of the Chapel for a quiet, serene morning of worship and Christmas carols accompanied by organist Charles Raines.
