Christmas at Christ Church Needham

The mystery of Christmas deepens at Christ Church Needham as parishioners prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25. Church members invite members of the public to join them in a busy slate of charitable, musical and worship activities.

SERVICES: CHRISTMAS EVE AND DAY

Christmas worship and choral events begin Christmas Eve with a family service at 4:00 pm in the main church. The service includes the annual pageant presented by children of the parish (see below). Bring the whole family for a Christmas carol sing-a-long at 8:30 pm. Then stay for a festive, dimly lit choral Eucharist service at 9:00 pm. Soloist Kim Lysaght will sing “O Holy Night” and everyone present will light candles and sing “Silent Night” as we prepare for a day of peace. On Christmas Day, join us for an intimate service in the Chapel at 9:00 am.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15

Celebrate the season at the Christ Church Christmas party on Saturday, December 15, 6:30 – 9:30 pm! Lovely Christmas music, great fellowship, festive Christmas décor, and a cash bar (also alcohol-free punch). Attendance is free but you are encouraged to bring hot or cold hors d’oeuvres or finger desserts. Please contact Jo-Anne Allen at jo-anne.fpior@hotmail.com or 781-444-3271 for information.

LAS POSADAS FOR YOUTH: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16

Young people from grades 8-12 are invited to attend a Diocesan youth event on December 16.  We will be visiting Ecclesia San Lucas in Chelsea on December 16 from 6-9 pm (leaving Christ Church at 5 pm).  There will be an informal worship time with Bishop Gayle Harris, great music and wonderful food (mostly special seasonal treats from Mexico and Central America). The event is a youth celebration of the tradition of Las Posadas, a Christmas custom from Mexico and Central America, in which “Mary and Joseph” visit all the homes in a village and are turned away, until finally, someone (usually the local church) invites them in, and the whole village celebrates together.  This celebration invites young people to contemplate what it means to welcome the stranger, and to provide shelter to those in need–and is just an incredible amount of fun! To register, or to find out more, please contact Rev. Scottie either by cell (978-979-1694), by email (scottie@ccneedham.org) or in person.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT PREPARATIONS

It’s time to plan the pageant, held annually at Christ Church at 4 pm on Christmas Eve, as part of our family service. All children of the Parish and visiting guests are welcome to participate. Sign up for roles: We have our two narrators and our Mary, but we still need our Joseph, three kings, and many more angels, shepherds and animals! There will be a sign-up sheet in Upper Parish Hall until the Sunday before Christmas.Volunteers requested: Two people to help give out costumes after the 10 am service on December 17, and one person at 3:30 pm on Christmas Eve to help the kids get ready for the 4 pm service. There is no formal rehearsal, but we do ask you to be in Lower Parish Hall by 3:30 pm on Christmas Eve.  For information or to volunteer, contact Rev. Scottie (978-979-1694 or Scottie@ccneedham.org)

YOUTH CHOIR PREPARES FOR ADVENT: REHEARSALS MONDAY EVENINGS, 4-5pm

The Christ Church Youth Choir invites children and youth in 4th grade and higher to join us as we prepare for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany at our new time: Mondays, 4:00 to 5:00 pm, in the Sanctuary at Christ Church. Now that the winter light is fading, we’ve moved our rehearsal times a bit earlier in the day. It’s never too late to join Youth Choir – now that fall sports have wrapped up, try something new–lifting your voice in song to the glory of God!  For more information, contact Lea Peterson (phone/text 860-707-3763, email lea.peterson95@gmail.com) or Myra Anderson (phone/text 781-258-9597, email myra.anderson@comcast.net).  Come let us sing unto the Lord!

CHRISTMAS MEMORIAL FLOWERS: REQUEST BY DECEMBER 16

Envelopes for contributions to memorial flowers on the altar at Christmas are available outside the main church and the chapel and in Upper Parish Hall.  Please place envelopes in the basket outside the church office by Sunday, December 16.

St. NICHOLAS SHOE DRIVE: THROUGH DECEMBER 16

In honor of St. Nicholas Day on December 6, Christ Episcopal Church is sponsoring a shoe drive to benefit Circle of Hope. We’re collecting new winter boots and sneakers, especially in toddler and children’s sizes, through December 16. Donations can be dropped in the “shoe box” located in the Upper Parish Hall of Christ Church from 9-2 Monday-Friday OR at Circle of Hope, 65 Rosemary St, during drop-off hours: Monday-Thursday & Saturday mornings 9-11 am, and Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons 3-5 pm.

THE GIVING TREE IS UP: THROUGH DECEMBER 16

The annual Christmas Giving Tree is up with tags ready for you to choose. All gifts need to be under the tree by Sunday, December 16 so that we can deliver them to the women and children of Shepherd House, a program for women in recovery, and at Transition House, a battered women’s shelter, in time to bring a bit of Christmas cheer.  Please see more information here.
